Digging Deeper into “fighting for humility”
There are several ideas that come to mind based on my study these last few weeks on humility:
1. I would continue to encourage a study of the primary passages in the New Testament that call us to “put off’ sin & “put on” the qualities of practical holiness. Note that humility is one of many virtues we are to “put on” & pride is one of many vices we are to “put off”. Some of those key scriptures include: Col 3:1-16; Rom 1:29-32; 1 Cor 5:9-11, Gal 5:19-25; Phil 4:8; 1 Tim 3:1-13 & 6:11-16; Tit 1:5-9 & 1 Pet 4:13.
2. It is helpful to think about fighting for humility & the other qualities of Jesus thru the Biblical category of “good fruit”. Here are a few of those key passages: Mt 3:8-10; Lk 3:9; Mt 7:15-23; 12:33-37; 13:8 & 26; Lk 13:6-9; Jn 15:1-11 & 16; Rom 6:19-23, Gal 5:19-24; Eph 5:9, Phil 1;11; Col 1:6 & 10; Tit 3:14 & 2:11-14 & Heb 12:11.
3. For those who wish to dig deeper into humility: • Some key scriptures include: o Col 3:12-15 & Eph 4:2-3 (note the 4 or 5 qualities mentioned in both passages & reflect on what this means) o Phil 2:3-11; I Pet 5:5-10; James 4:5-10; o Mt 11:29, Mt 23:12; Lk14:11, 18:11-14 & Acts 20:19; o Many texts that relate to humility don’t use the word. For example: Jn 13:1-20 • A few good books are: o Humility: the Beauty of Holiness by Andrew Murray o Humility: by C J Mahaney
4. I would recommend you read one or more good books on the larger topic of practical holiness (gospel-centered sanctification). A few that I highly recommend include: • Holiness by J C Ryle • Future Grace by John Piper • Respectable Sins & The Discipline of Grace by Jerry Bridges • The Pathway of Holiness by John White • Just Like Jesus by Max Lucado |
